HUG YOUR PEOPLE – JACK MITCHELL
Being Nice is Actually Good Business Sense – Freda Liu
Upon seeing the title of the book, you might either get excited positively or be a little wary, depending on what personality type you possess. Is it another touchy feely book? Yes and no. Jack Mitchell has an easy style to his writing. Although a lot of what is written is common sense (to some), he makes his points come alive with real life examples.
He has a 5-step plan for creating a winning team. Being nice, learning to trust, instilling pride, including your team in decision-making process and recognizing contributions. Although these are not rocket science techniques, it is always easier said than done. Mitchell intersperses all these steps as a business owner himself, as he is currently running a third-generation business himself.
He provides tips on hiring people with the right attitude and heart with some valid questions. This book gives a base but the reader needs to do some homework and put some thought on expanding the suggestions given. It only serves as a guide.
You can sense his commitment to build genuine relationships with coworkers by recognizing their needs and valuing their contributions. With the current work situation as is, he emphasizes building the trust factor. Transparency was mentioned as one and that it’s about having expectations and standards from employees and not rules and regulations. This may sound like the same thing no doubt but it definitely sets a different tone.
It was an interesting and easy read for with me although it was not the initial reaction. These are practical and effective steps which should be kept handy in the bookshelf not just because you are a manager; it’s a good guide for building relationships.
