Power of Less
Power of LessPower of Less: The Fine Art of Limiting Yourself to the Essential…in Business and in Life by Leo Babaut
I was rivetted by the title of the book especially in the age of Twitter, Facebook and MySpace. I enjoyed the book thoroughly and it was a pleasant and easy read. For a self-development junkie, I must admit I have read a lot of books about setting goals and keeping things simple.
Babauta captured the essence of the modern executive and provided simple steps. The crux of his message was to start small and more importantly not to beat ourselves up when we don’t. He explained the psyche of new year resolutions and why these don’t work.
He set the six simple principles of productivity:
1. Set limitations
2. Choose the essential
3. Simplify
4. Focus
5. Create habits
6. Start small
Simple is not always easy as we all know. Otherwise these sorts of books don’t pop up. He recommended limiting the time we checked e-mail to minimize disruptions which I am sure Internet addicts will have hard time swallowing but the logic of keeping only the essential stuff essential. He talks about the benefits of a morning ritual.
His mantra of small wins to ensure we stay in the game and not to lose motivation was a constant reminder. I have to admit it gives me encouragement to get started and my juices flowing . Although some of these tips are not new to me, I did learn a lot of new tricks. I have to comment Leo for his easy style of writing and suggestions that make it easy and tempting to follow. The layout of the book is pleasing to the eye which makes for easy reading.
