Life's a Pitch - How to sell yourself and your brilliant ideas
You would sit up to a book that claims its inspiration comes from Niccolo Machiavelli whose “ruthless understanding of personal ambition has inspired us both.”
Stephen Bayley is an academic, art historian and author. Roger Mavity comes from an advertising background. Both have found the rapport to co-write this book. It works quite well actually. They akin pitching to theatre and not just passing on information.
According to the book, every moment of our lives is a pitch from our facial expressions to how we dress…so make every encounter count.
The book does get a bit tedious at times when it seems like they are talking to themselves and when British examples and situations are used. There are several gems though.
Roger gave an account of his experience with Cyril Vadamootoo, the head of the Mauritian Tourism Office. His agency was asked to pitch and he wasn’t keen. However, he was informed by his team that it would look good for the agency’s profile.
Roger was kept waiting for over an hour and then subsequently informed that the venue had been changed to the client’s office. Upon arriving, they were told they had 10 minutes to pitch for an account Roger did not want anyway. To cut a long story short, he said he wasn’t keen and the client ended up asking them because they stood their ground.
Listen to the role reversal as Roger stood his ground and ended up winning the account. It was a show of passion over logic and passion won. A very important message in today’s marketplace. It’s a good grab-and-read for quick ideas.
