The Power of Positive Thinking in Business

This book is based on Norman Vincent Peale’s classic, in cooperation with the Peale Center. This was the time before Neuro Linguistics Programming became all the rage. This book gave a refreshed look at how positive thinking has such a major implication in business and it’s not just about being happy.

For people who didn’t think negative thinking had a cost, check this out. According to the Labor Statistics, US companies lose about $3 billion a year on negativity. This comes in the form of loss productivity due to gossiping, griping, complaining and undermining the efforts of others. There are also costs related to customer dissatisfaction and loss of goodwill.

Why do so many people fail to reach their full potential in business? From his workshops, the common denominator seems to be the “lack” mentality. Lack of training, lack of resources and lack of planning are some reasons. Lack, loss, limitations are words that spell internal barriers. According to Ventrella, unless we deal with these inner obstacles, all the intentions, plans and strategies won’t help us reach our goals.

He outlined 10 traits that can help spur our success in business. Ventrella took the traits further by grouping them into distinct groups and provided techniques and tips for awakening dormant traits. It helped that modern examples and scenarios were also given.

I particularly enjoyed the chapter on patience. It brought up “situational” impatience and I recognized a lot of me in the various situations. By being able to specify the situation when I lose my patience, I can then isolate the situation and be more proactive about dealing with the issue.

For those who have read Norman Vincent Peale’s, The Power of Positive Thinking, this is a well-written refreshed look and would recommend reading it.
