The hype has been building for “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” for months–and the initial reports indicate the eagerly-awaited supernatural movie is putting up blockbuster box office numbers. According to early estimates from Hollywood.com, Summit Entertainment’s “New Moon,” which opened on Friday at 12:01 a.m., posted the largest opening-day box office gross on record, taking in $72.7 million on its first day. That beats out “The Dark Knight” (Warner Bros.) which took in $67.2 million on its opening day in 2008, and “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” (Paramount) which brought in $62 million on its first day earlier this year. Pretty awesome, huh? By the way, Taylor Lautner is so freaking hot with his hair cut short. “New Moon” also posted the largest midnight opening on record, grossing $26.3 million at the late-night screenings. That’s ahead of “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” which logged $22.2 milion for the second-biggest preview opening, and “The Dark Knight” which grossed $18.5 million for third-place on the all-time list of such showings.
